Agriculture

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, Uganda’s fertile agricultural land has the potential to feed 200 million people. Eighty percent of Uganda’s land is arable but only 35% is being cultivated.

Most Ugandan farmers grow subsistence crops like maize, cassava, sweet potatoes, and beans. At least 7% of the population relies on unprotected and unclean water sources from the ground for their main water supply. That’s around 3 million people gathering water from local ponds and streams

Agricultural productivity in Uganda is below its potential – constrained by limited use of modern farming methods. Weather is increasingly volatile, yet few farmers use irrigation. Modern seed and fertilisers available on the market are of low quality, and avoided by farmers.
